ONE Prize: New West residents to launch three wonderful projects for New West
(New Westminster, BC) May 18, 2016 —
Donald’s Market and River Market are pleased to announce this year’s ONE Prize winners; a community fund created just for New West.
The ONE Prize is funded by Donald’s Market Goodness Reward members in New Westminster. The grocery store contributes 1% of every dollar they spend to the community fund. This year, the fund has $4,500 in prize money. The ONE Prize fund is a collective piggy bank. “It’s a simple and powerful idea,” says Donald’s Market general manager Eric Siu. “Alone, 1% of a grocery bill does little, but when pooled with your neighbours’ 1%, it can support local projects that contribute to the place where we all live and work.”
This year, 15 outstanding projects were submitted to ONE Prize. A jury of one Donald’s Market staff and four community members narrowed the projects down to five; and over the past two weeks, members voted for the winners. This year, three projects will be awarded $1500 each. Bike Share & Repair, proposed by HUB-New West, will match those with a bike they no longer need with those who need a bike. The purpose is to collect unused bicycles, repair them with the assistance of New Westminster Secondary School Bike Club, and distribute them to local, low-income families that can benefit from having a bicycle. New Westminster Day of Dance is a celebration of community, culture, and movement. The day will include free dance instructions, dance contest, and a dance party. Uptown Parklet, proposed by New Westminster Environmental Partners, seeks to add a public space for socializing in one of several identified sites along the 6th Street corridor.
“We would like to thank and congratulate all the applicants for their ideas to benefit our City’s livability,” says River Market’s ONE project lead Leslie Shieh. “This year is ONE Prize’s fifth year and each year we have been greatly impressed by the project proposals. Each project, regardless of size, demonstrates an incredible commitment to this community.”
To contribute to the ONE Prize fund, shoppers can sign up for their Goodness Reward keytag at the Donald’s Market checkout counter at River Market.
