Applications are now open for the seventh year of ONE Prize. The hunt is on once again for innovative, community-based projects.
The projects kick-started by ONE Prize have been both big and small. Some projects create opportunities to bring neighbours together, for example, PopLuck (ONE Prize 2012), a series of pop-up potluck picnics, and Crafts for Kids at Heart (2013), a series of craft nights for grownups. Some projects seek to tackle social issues such as Refood (2015), a social enterprise working to reduce food waste by turning excess produce from local grocers into healthy lunches for those in need. Each project, regardless of size, demonstrates an incredible commitment to this community. Many projects have grown into larger initiatives. Artstarts on Sundays (2013) was a pilot to bring family arts programming into communities outside of Vancouver. Today, six years later, Artstarts on Sundays still happens on the last Sunday of every month at River Market with the generous support from Westminster Savings.
This past year, members have collectively raised $6,000 for the ONE Prize; and three projects will be awarded $2,000 each. The project group can be a non-profit organization, a for-profit enterprise, a community group, or an individual. The aim of ONE Prize is to kick start new projects or strengthen existing ones, rather than to fund a group’s ongoing operating costs.
ONE Prize was launched in 2012 by Donald’s Market and River Market as a community fund for New Westminster. When Goodness Rewards members shop at Donald’s Market in New Westminster, the grocery store contributes 1% of every dollar spent to the ONE Prize fund.
What’s incredible about the ONE Prize projects is that they are the outcomes of us collectively investing in our own backyard. Donald’s Market contributes 1% of all grocery sales made by Goodness Rewards members in New West. Applicants propose and share their ideas and initiatives. The awarded projects are collectively chosen. And then, bringing the projects to fruition requires help from volunteers as well as contributions from other local businesses and organizations.
Have you got an awesome project idea for New West?
We can’t wait to learn about it! The deadline for submissions is Sunday, April 15, 2018 at 11:59pm. Visit rivermarket.ca/oneprize for more information and to access the online submission form. In mid-April, the proposals received will be shortlisted by a jury for final voting by Goodness Rewards (New West) members. Prizes will be announced mid May 2018.
To contribute to the ONE Prize fund, shoppers can sign up for Donald’s Market’s Goodness Rewards program at the cashier.
