It’s Time To Get Curious
River Market once again hosts Curious Flea, Sept. 14- 15
(New Westminster, BC) August 29, 2013 —After the extraordinary success of its first Curious Flea in June, River Market is happy to present the next edition on Sept. 14 and 15, and to announce that the shopping and social event is now a quarterly event.
Since opening its doors late in 2010, River Market at Westminster Quay has encouraged the curious. The 72,000-square-foot market is divvied into the Hungry Floor on the first level — with tempting tastemakers like Wild Rice restaurant and New West landmarks such as the Paddlewheeler Pub — and the Curious Floor upstairs, where visitors can try a circus class, learn an instrument, take in a temporary art exhibit or rent desk space by the hour. In June, the Market got even more curious as it held its inaugural Curious Flea, which featured a host of antiques, collectible and whatnots, and drew a crowd from all across the Lower Mainland who wanted to see all that this flea, and New Westminster, had to offer.
In September, River Market will do it again, with even more vendors and curiosities to discover. On Sept. 14 and 15,we’ll welcome a myriad of vendors who will be selling carefully chosen mid-century modern items, antiques, and collectibles. Many vendors are artisans who are rebuilding and reimagining items, recreating the past with their vision of the future. Vendors include Brick & Mortar Living, Framed by the Vintage Sisters, Middleground Folk Art and Design, The Upholster’s Wife, Belle Encore and more.
River Market is the perfect location for this modern kind of flea market. It’s already home to quality vintage goods, thanks to merchant Mid Century Modern Home. Owner Jenny Cashin has developed a following for the shop’s beautifully restored Danish Modern and Mid-Century Modern furniture, art, lighting and decorative pieces. It also hosts the Artisan’s Market, an incubator space and retail shop for upcoming artisans to create and sell their wares. And just steps away is New West’s historic Antique Alley: Front Street’s colourful clutch of antique stores. They’ll be well represented at Curious Flea and visitors are encouraged to complete their day by strolling over to the shops on Front Street.
Highlights of Curious Flea include live music, incredible merchandise, and the Battle of the Curious: a match-up of unusual items that everyone is invited to take part in. Have something jaw-droppingly strange tucked away in the back of a closet? Bring it to the flea on Saturday, Sept. 14. The most curious object will be immortalized forever in the Curious Hall of Fame, and the winner will receive a spectacular prize. Finally, of course, there’s the food. At no other flea market can shoppers take a break from browsing to enjoy award-winning restaurants alongside a spectacular riverside view.
