It’s cold out there! That’s the battle cry for Coldest Night of the Year, a fundraiser where communities across Canada raise funds for those that are hurting, hungry or homeless. Here in New Westminster, Seniors Services Society will be raising funds for their housing initiatives for homeless and at-risk seniors across Metro Vancouver.
This is the 4th annual Coldest Night event in New Westminster, and Seniors Services Society is hoping to raise $45,000. Funds raised through the Coldest Night event help with moving and relocation costs, rent supplements and for those with nothing, everything needed to set up a household.
Seniors Services Society hears from as many as 200 seniors each month who are either homeless or at risk of homelessness and assisted over 2200 clients in some form of housing crisis last year. “We’re actually quite dismayed by the number of people coming to us in housing distress. It’s a growing problem. The numbers have doubled in the last year,” said Seniors Services Society’s Executive Director Brian Dodd. “We live in an affluent society but seniors are now falling through the cracks.”
Seniors Services Society is encouraging walkers, both individuals, and teams, to bundle up and raise cold, hard cash for The Coldest Night of the Year. The family-friendly fundraising event will take place on the evening of February 24, 2018, at the River Market.
