One Prize

A strong community is the foundation of vibrant culture and healthy commerce. We at River Market are inspired by the residents of New Westminster. People love this city and want to make it even better. In this spirit, we created the Community Grant program. A series of small grants is awarded to projects that nurture and strengthen our community from the ground up. For example, a grant could be used to start a community garden or compost on your block or a food festival to bring neighbors together. If you have an idea for making our community better, we’d like to hear from you. All projects must take place in New Westminster. The next call for proposals will be in Spring 2012.

Your Food, Naturally by Laura Vladimirova

July 1, Canada Day. This is an one day event of demonstrations, workshops, and games that is all about meeting our food in its most natural state, be it on a branch, inside shells, and carved off a tree. It is about looking at your food in a whole new way – the secret lives of our everyday foods!

  • Meet local farmers who will showcase their crops before they are trimmed for grocery store containers
  • See a photography exhibition of what fruits, vegetables and nuts look like as they grow
  • Learn to make food using parts we typically throw way, such as carrot tops
  • Make art and sculptures using food materials
