Our next interview in the Meet Our Shop Owners blog series is Jenny Cashin from Mid Century Modern HOME.
What do you love most about working at Mid Century Modern HOME?
“I like seeing the transformations the team does, working with restoring the wood and upholstery. It’s really exciting to see the end result when we finish our projects. Many people come into the store, and they wonder whether the furniture is brand new. I get to tell them it’s all vintage!”
What inspired you to start?
“I bought a house when I first moved to Vancouver that was built in 1913 and restored it over two years. I learned a lot of technical and trade skills doing the restoration. I also sourced restoration items like hardwood flooring, used kitchens and vintage lighting on Craigslist. When the house was done, I started directing my new skills to restoring furniture in my garage.”
What do you like to do on your spare time?
“I always enjoyed gardening, social time with my friends and family, and love listening to music. I usually tune in to 102.7 The PEAK often, attend local concerts and jazz festivals. There’s an amazing source of local music and performers in Vancouver.
What do you like to eat/drink at River Market?
“It’s really hard to choose a favorite at River Market, I like a bit of everything. I really like the Yellow Curry at Longtail Kitchen, the Wonton soup at Wild Rice Restaurant, the Chicken Tostada from Pamola Bakery, the Soup and Sandwich from Paddlewheeler Pub, and of course, the gelato at Tre Galli Gelato Caffe!”
What is your favourite family tradition from your childhood?
“I really enjoyed celebrating Christmas with my family and we still do it. What I like most about Christmas is when most of my extended family gets together, and we all get to catch up. Everyone chips into cooking a big, tasty meal together in the kitchen and it’s a lot of fun!”
What is a secret fun fact about you?
“When it comes to secrets, most people don’t know that I spent 15 years working in New York City as a teacher at a private independent school in Greenwich Village. New York is an amazing place for great music. You have to spend at least a week in the city when visiting to get a taste of everything New York. There is so much to do it’s incredible! I’ve done a lot of traveling myself. I’ve gone to Ecuador, Morocco, Mexico, Italy, France, and London.”
If you had a million dollars, how would you spend it?
“If I had a million dollars, I would buy a building with retail space on the ground floor for my business. I would get three suites, rent two of them out and have one for myself.”
If you could meet anyone (dead or alive) who would it be and why?
“I would want to meet one of the modern mid-century architects and find out what their inspiration was. I would want to find out how those architects stayed true to their vision while it was still blossoming.”
Think back to when you were little, do you remember what you wanted to be when you grow up?
“When I was little, I always needed to express my creative side. I also loved working with children and nurturing their creative side. I liked the showmanship of being a teacher.”
What is your favourite furniture to refurbish?
“Definitely seating, especially Danish modern seating. I love the impressive results when they are completely restored and reupholstered.CONTACT
